Appaloosa Branch Library
Scottsdale, ArizonaLocated in the desert in northern Scottsdale, Az., the Appaloosa Branch Library features 27,000 square feet of torch-applied Firestone APP Premium FR Cap over 2 layers of 3” Firestone ISO 95+ polyiso insulation, attached with 7 in. Firestone Heavy-Duty Fasteners. After the membranes were installed, the entire roof was coated with Firestone AcryliTop PC-100 Coating for increased reflectivity.
One of the unique attributes of the building is its metal skin, which changes from a primarily silver-gray color to a grayish green and pink-purple shade. The resulting mirage effect is created through the first U.S. commercial use of an iridescent coating on the metal cladding which reflects the sun’s heat, helping the library stay cool, consume less energy and minimize its environmental impact.
With the intent of achieving LEED Gold level certification, the Appaloosa Branch Library incorporated a number of sustainable building materials into its design. In addition to its highly reflective roofing system, the site restored native vegetation, selected building materials to reduce heat island effect, utilized oversized ductwork to reduce noise and energy consumption, and added a photovoltaic array that reduces peak energy. Together, these factors result in 32 percent energy reduction and 53 percent water reduction.
The roof was installed by Progressive Roofing, Inc. and is protected by a Firestone Red Shield 15-year Warranty.
