It’s year 1980, Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” tops the charts, the first Pac-Man arcade games are released and “O Canada” is adopted as our national anthem.
The Arab Oil Embargo is changing the construction industry. There is a decrease in quality of petroleum and rising environmental concerns are a bane for bituminous roof assemblies. The built-up roof, which had been dominant for most of the century, is suddenly out of favour. A new high performing roofing product is on the rise. Its name is Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer or EPDM for short.
Albo Corp., Westbend, Wisconsin
In October 1980, history is made in Westbend, Wisconsin where the first Firestone RubberGard EPDM system is installed on Albo Corporation’s 7,900 square foot facility. It was trust in the Firestone brand and the first Firestone licensed contractor that persuaded Dan Mueller, owner for the Albo Co., to give the nascent roofing product a chance.
The very first warranted Firestone RubberGard EPDM project – 35 years later.
Tom Haug from Haug Roofing and Dan Mueller Owner of Albo Manufacturing were friends. “Here is a person who sees me in church and sees me when I come into town. We share the same community.” said Tom. “I knew the reputation of my father and grandfather was riding on my shoulders. I explained to Dan that my future was going to be made or broken with EPDM from Firestone.” This first roof was only 7,900 sq.ft. not a high profile project in a high visibility city, but rather in a place where trust was the strongest contract of all.
Today, after thirty five years the very first RubberGard EPDM roof has weathered all the Midwestern United States could throw at it, and continues to preform without any issues.
Firestone RubberGard EPDM today
Throughout the last three decades, billions of square feet of this special synthetic rubber membrane has been installed throughout the world – from the arid Middle-Eastern deserts to the glacial Canadian north. The durability, ease of use, and the life-cycle cost make RubberGard EPDM a standout choice.
